Grass Zoysia

Zoysia care calendar

Tell us when your lawn greens up and when frost arrives. The plan follows.

These are rough starting guesses. Set the two months below to match your own lawn.

In frost-free areas, pick the month the lawn usually slows and browns.

Timings are from extension calendars written for North Carolina, Georgia and South Carolina. Local timing varies: check your county extension service.

What the plan is based on

    • Spring pre-emergent goes down before the soil warms: mid-February to early March in North Carolina (NC State). The calendar puts it two months before your green-up.
    • First nitrogen, 0.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft, about three weeks after green-up (NC State); UGA waits for 65 °F soil at 4 inches.
    • Summer feeds of 0.5 to 1 lb in late June or early July and mid-August (NC State).
    • No nitrogen after August (UGA) and none within six weeks of first frost (Clemson).
    • Autumn: potash, 1 lb K2O per 1,000 sq ft, and pre-emergent for winter weeds (NC State).
    • Dethatch when thatch exceeds half an inch, after green-up and in June or July (NC State, UGA).
    • Preventive grub control in June (NC State).

Amounts come out as pounds of product in the lawn calculator.
