How the ranking works
Each cultivar starts with no penalty. Shade, winter hardiness and mower fit each add a penalty if the published rating falls short of what you asked for, and a smaller one if we found no rating. Seeded cultivars (Zenith and Compadre) are the only ones shown if you plant from seed. Texas A&M's shade trial counts how often each cultivar was in the top statistical group over three years under live oaks; the others use Clemson's descriptions.
