How each number is worked out
- Fertiliser: pounds of product = (rate in lb N per 1,000 sq ft x area / 1,000) / (N % / 100). NC State's rule for half a pound is 50 divided by the first number.
- Annual budget: a typical year of 0.5 lb in spring, 0.5 to 1 lb in early summer and 0.5 to 1 lb in August comes to 1.5 to 2.5 lb N. UGA suggests 2 to 3 lb a year, UC IPM 2 to 4, and NC State sets a ceiling of 4.
- Potash: 1 lb K2O per 1,000 sq ft in autumn (NC State), so product = area / 1,000 / (K % / 100).
- Water: one inch over one square foot is 0.623 US gallons. NC State advises 0.5 to 1 inch a week, wetting 4 to 6 inches deep.
- Mowing: never remove more than a third of the leaf (UGA), so mow when the grass reaches 1.5 times your cutting height. Extension heights range from 0.5 to 2 inches; see mowing.
- Plugs: area divided by spacing squared. Seed: 1 to 2 lb per 1,000 sq ft for seeded cultivars (Clemson).
Always read the product label; the label rate overrides these figures.
